A beautiful night here from the banks of the Delaware as Trenton welcomes Harrisburg back to town for another four-game series. Game one was the definition of a pitcher’s duel as the Thunder eeked out a 1-0 victory with a walk-off RBI single by Chris Malec. Ryan Pope (pictured) got the start for the Thunder and was BRILLIANT as the right hander tossed eight innings of shutout baseball and only allowed two hits (the only two baserunners to reach against Pope). Ryan also struck out a season-high 11 batters (the most strikeouts recorded by a Thunder starter all season). At one point in the 8th inning, Pope had retired 19 batters in a row before an infield single by Francisco Plasencia ended the streak. Harrisburg’s starter Jeff Mandel also pitched a gem as the right-hander went eight shutout innings and gave up just three hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Here are the highlights (there is only one)….
BOTTOM 9th – After a leadoff single by Austin Krum, Eduardo Nunez laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Krum to second. Then Malec slapped a single up the middle off Harrisburg reliever Carlos Martinez (6-5), who was tagged with the loss, and Krum slid headfirst into home to score the only run of the night as the Thunder walked off with a 1-0 victory.

….back with more tomorrow as Trenton and Harrisburg play games two and three of the series with a doubleheader (two 7-inning games) starting at 6:05.
